Motorcycle Trip Out West
My son asked me in the summer of 06 if I'd be interested in doing a long motorcycle tour with him?
Took me about a tenth of a second to answer yes!
While we were trying to decide where, my employer asked if we'd be interested in a trip to Wyoming to a BMW (motorcycle) rally.
Hmmm...two weeks off work in the middle of the summer... since I'd have never dreamed of asking for that much time in the summer the answer came quickly!
We left in July of 07, 15 days, 3200 miles. Central Illinois to Gillette Wyoming.
We chose backroads and the most desolate stretches we could find, well worth the effort!
Very few cars, fantastic scenery, and regular people living their lives (no tourist traps).
Some of the highlights were Fort Robinson in NW. Nebraska, the great grasslands of Western Iowa and Eastern Nebraska, the great sandhills of Northern Nebraska, the Oregon Trail, Devils Tower, Chimney Rock, Mount Rushmore, Custer state Park, and the Black hills of South Dakota.
Road trips offer so many wonderful views of our great country!
Heading out the first day.
Our first nights lodging, in a caboose!
Wide open spaces...all for us!
Very hot, but what a grand view!
Almost like a postcard from the past,
same view as the native people enjoyed hundreds of years ago
We got a super deal on armored (and vented) jackets!
On a ranch in the Sandhills of Northern Nebraska.
No one to bother you for miles!
Waiting for our laundry to finish at the Fort
Our quarters on the grounds of Fort Robinson, Nebraska
The view from our Quarters!
Relic from the past...
Camping at the rally wasn't about camping, it was about the rally...
Hot and dry all week...until the rally...rained all night!
My kind of road!
Custer State Park, way larger than one would imagine!

Mike wasn't quite sure what to to when the bison started toward him...
At the last moment, the bison turned and walked off the road, whew!
